The Dewan Dakwah Islamiyah Indonesia (DDII), one of the most prominent daʿwa (Islamic proselytising) organisations in modern Indonesia, was founded in 1967 at a gathering attended by members of the then recently disbanded Masyumi party. Led by Mohammad Natsir (1908-93), Masyumi had campaigned-unsuccessfully-during the first decade and a half of Indonesian independence for Islam to be accorded an expanded role in the formal institutions of the Indonesian state.
