Architecture in Bengal sprang from an interaction between imported ideas (from northern India, West and Central Asia, and, later, Europe) and indigenous resources, the de-signs varying according to the visual choices of the sponsors and their attitudes, and changing political ideologies. 1. Overview Bengal-the anglicised form of the name Bangāla of the eighth/fourteenth-century Delhi historians-is located in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent and consists of pre-sent-day Bangladesh and the Indian province of West Bengal. It consists of the delta of three
