Baku (Bākū, also Bākūh, Bākuh), on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, is the ancient capital of Azerbaijan. The heart of Baku is its mediaeval old town, and it is here where the city's most important monuments are concentrated. All of them are constructed of limestone. Part of the city walls dates to the time of the Shīrvānshāh Manūchihr III (r. c. 514-55/1120-60), as recorded by a Kufic inscription.
