Anniyya , literally, "that-ness," is a technical term in Arabic philosophy and Islamic mysticism. It is almost certainly derived from the conjunction anna ("that"), or (if vowelled as inniyya ) from the adverb inna ("truly"). The traditional designation of both particles as resembling the verb explains the rule that the following substantive is in the accusative, that is, as if it were an objective complement to a word with the force of the verb "to see" (compare the cognate Hebrew term hinneh , "behold").
