Muḥammad Tawfīq b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Bakrī (1870-1932), a descendant of the al-Bakrī family of Ṣūfī notables, was a poet, political thinker, historian, and the highest Ṣūfī authority in Egypt during the British occupation. Khedive ʿAbbās Ḥilmī II (r. 1892-1914) appointed him to the government post of "representative of the descendants of the Prophet" ( naqīb al-ashrāf ) from 1892 to 1895, and again from 1903 to 1911. He received the Ottoman title of "chief judge of Anatolia" ( Anadolu kazaskeri ) from Sulṭān Abdülhamid II (ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd
