Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. al-Mubārak/al-Ḥasan al-Aḥmar (d. 194/810) was an Arab philologist of the Kufan school. He was a very eager and faithful disciple of the philologist al-Kisāʾī (d. 189/805), whom he met frequently as a young man while working in the palace guard of Hārūn al-Rashīd (r. 170-93/786-809). He had a keen interest in grammar and, as a dedicated follower of his master, took part in al-Kisāʾī's munāẓara with Sībawayhi (d. c.180/796). His
