Ahmad Sanusi bin Abdurrahim of Sukabumi (1888-1950) was born into a family of ʿulamāʾ and studied with his father and other West Javanese ʿulamāʾ . He completed his education with a seven-year stay in Mecca, learning at the feet of the leading Shāfiʿī scholars of the day. After his return to West Java in 1915, he quickly established his reputation as a teacher and moderate reformer of pesantren education as well as a critic of the colonial administration.
