Adab al-muftī is a literary genre that defines the position of the muftī, a Muslim jurist who issues an expert legal opinion in response to a question or writes a legal opinion on a subject that he considers significant. Arguably the first treatise in this genre was the Adab al-muftī wa-l-mustaftī, written by the Shāfiʿī jurist Abū l-Qāsim ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. al-Ḥusayn al-Ṣaymarī (d. c.386/996) (al-Qāsimī 1986, 16). Two later Shāfiʿī texts that are frequently consulted are Ibn al-
