Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Hādī Abū Rīda (1909-91) was an Egyptian diplomat, professor of Islamic philosophy, and promulgator of the view and methods of early twentieth-century German orientalism; he also produced critical editions of Muslim classics. He was born in al-ʿArīsh (Sinai, Egypt), attended kuttāb and state schools, and graduated in philosophy from the Egyptian University (now Cairo University) in 1934. After an educational stay of eight months in Paris, he finished his master's thesis on the Muʿtazilī thinker Ibrāhīm b. Sayyār al-Naẓẓām (d. between 220/
