This book contains reports of two projects--one in Ethiopia, one in Palestine--that integrated a Geographical Information System (GIS) into the educational planning process. (A GIS is a computer program that combines two databases: numerical data such as traditional data on schools, teachers, and students; and geographic data such as the location of schools, district boundaries, and topographical features.) The report on the Ethiopian project describes what a GIS consists of and how it works; explains how the GIS can be used to aid decision-making; and relates how a GIS on schools and education had been set up in the face of the many challenges in a developing country. The report on the Palestinian project describes how the GIS on schools and education had been established with the Palestinian Ministry of Education and demonstrates its functionality. It also discusses the structure of the GIS and its applications for educational microplanning; the difficulties in establishing the GIS and barriers to the appropriation of GIS by the ministry; and some of the beneficial outcomes of the project on planning and management functions. Text in both reports is supplemented by tables, figures, and colored maps. (WFA).
