Social Thought
The University of Chicago
2015
Alfarabi is one of the few philosophers in the history of political thought who treats the nation with any degree of thoroughness. He does so in large part because of the importance of the concept of the Umma, or nation, in Islamic thought. However, Alfarabi's account of the subject undermines the more conventional Muslim understanding. His discussion sheds light not only on his view of the Umma, but on his understanding of civilization, philosophy, religion, and politics as well.
