Bitter Sea is the story of Masha, the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants whose path to the U.S. was anything but direct (including stops in the USSR as well as pre- and post-independence West Africa). Her questions about diaspora, connection, and home, are challenged and enriched by her relationship with Saman, a Persian Jewish painter she meets on an airplane.
