Ashura (also spelled Ashoura) takes place on the tenth day of Muharram when Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husayn that took place in 61 AH/ 680 AD. It is a socio-religious phenomenon that combines ritualistic and theatrical behavior. My objective is to shed light on the interaction between ritual and theatrical behavior and how these work together to form the overall event. The first section introduces the historical background of Ashura, the second section explores the ritualistic and theatrical characteristics of Ashura, and the last, concluding section talks about the relation between the two aspects and how they work together.
