"The Impact of climate change on low temperature adaptation is a much-neglected field in research and policy. A commonly held view is that with increasing temperatures under climte change, the negative impact of low temperature on organisms adapted to cold regions will be reduced. However, increasing fluctuations in temperature mean the risk of cold as well as heat stress will pose a greater threat to ectothermic and endothermic organisms both on land and in aquatic environments. For example, frost injury is expected to cause devastating damage to crops on an increasingly large scale. Improving shared knowledge of the biological mechanisms of temperature adaptation in microorganisms, plants and animals will help present major losses of crops, genetic resources and species diversity."
