This book is a collection of original papers and open discussions presented at a conference on neurosciences and ethics. It is the first one to deal comprehensively with the ethical questions that have resulted from the rapid development of neuroscience and neuromedicine and have already become a matter of public discussion. A detailed presentation of molecular biology, of the structure and function of neuronal transmitter processes as well as of the principles of neuronal networks, is followed by a description of the problems of neurogenetic diseases, of intensive care medicine, neurosurgery, and the epidemiology of depression and addiction. On this basis, open ethical questions regarding the investigation and treatment of nervous disorders and mental illness are dealt with and formulated in a closing recommendation.
